Getting stuck on purpose

Today we are at the famous dunes of Erg Chegaga. I can only repeat myself about how superb this environment is - and how hard it is to get it onto a photograph.

But we are not only here for fun, we are here to learn something. So we deliberately get several vehicles stuck - all diff locks off, wrong tyre pressure, full throttle - and then recover them in various different ways.

We are the demonstration vehicle for recovery using sand ladders. It works excellently, and the ladders do not get bent in the slightest - provided somebody explains the tricks to you first.

The last training point

The day starts once again with wonderful views. The outlook from up on the dune in particular sits very high on my personal list.

Afterwards we head to the final training point: vehicle checks and maintenance. The cabs get tilted, temperatures measured, filters cleaned and visual inspections carried out.

Then we find ourselves a spot among the rocks. Another excellent photo location.

Aït-Ben-Haddou

We move back towards civilisation again. First to a bazaar, then on to the tourist hotspot of Aït-Ben-Haddou.

This old mud-brick town now consists largely of souvenir shops, and the streets around it are once again full of cars. Even so - or perhaps because of it - it is a wonderful place.

It is also familiar from a number of films and series - it stands in for Essos in Game of Thrones, and in Gladiator it is the arena after his arrest.

And there is plenty of choice when it comes to food here too. Vegetarian tajine has by now become Saskia’s favourite dish.
